It’s been a lovely lovely spring the last few days. The tulips and flocks have been out. Betsie has been keeping the lawn mowed short.  Even the baby white clover I planted for her to chew on is doing great.  I just scattered it around by hand – we’ll find out soon if this was a bad idea or not.  I’m just happy that something is growing in that bare dirt shady area! Our new deck furniture is just wonderful despite being covered in pollen at the moment – this puts us about 3 weeks behind the folks in Chapel Hill, NC as they had excess pollen when we...

Too busy to write = Too busy to worry

One week from now I’ll hopefully be done with surgery and on my way home if not already home.  I won’t know what time to report on the 29th until the day before. Working backwards from there….. The night before surgery, Don and I will drive down to Chapel Hill and take up residence in the lovely Carolina Inn, across the road and a few blocks away from the hospitals.  (Don’t tell anyone, but the secret to staying at the Carolina is to use priceline.com!)  I think we will ask if they can do a flexible checkout time or if we can decide late if we need to book another night… we will see, maybe a lot of people ask that since the hospital is right there. Earlier that day (Tuesday) I will be spending 5 hours in the car as my boss and I...

Kite skating

When I lived at the NJ Shore I got into flying ‘power kites’ or ‘traction kites’ on land. These huge airfoils are flown on four lines giving the kite pilot perfect control over their flight path. Flying loops and figure eights is fun, but these kites are designed for Pulling power. Kite buggying, endlessly more popular in Europe than in the US, led to kiteboarding in water and snow kiting. My favorite though has been kite skating. In Manasquan, NJ there is a national guard training field. My guess is that it measures a mile wide by 3 miles long. It’s also oceanfront. Just one sand dune separates it from the shore creating the perfect wind for kites. I went kite skating here half a dozen times before I moved away. Just lots...

Allow me to introduce: Betsie Lawnbott

This will be the fourth year since I got Betsie, my Lawnbott. She’s a robotic lawnmower. In the beginning it was kind of like getting a new pet, I’d spend hours after work outside helping her mow the huge lawn at the house I was renting near Annapolis, Maryland. I think she caught up once. It was just too much, too weedy, too thick, to unprotected from the roads near by. That fall we moved to Charlottesville and to our newly purchased house. It’s land is about 1/4 acre, with at least half of it in the front yard. It’s the nicest front yard on the street I say. Perfect for Betsie to take care of. Ever since I got Betsie I’d wanted to put a wireless webcam onto her. Kind of like that guy did with his Roomba, or at least SAID...

Data data data

I was messing around with Google Docs today and decided to make a Google Docs Form that could let anyone who wanted to share their audiogram and see how it relates to others. Then I started playing with Google Docs charts and came up with a way to display the data. I found lots of limitations, like I had to make the dBs negative to have the scale go from top to bottom instead of bottom to top. Not sure what my plans for this are, but feel free to fill out the form. 🙂 http://www.sarasera.com/?page_id=144

Another work trip

Another work trip

Another work tripOriginally uploaded by sajego First gorgeous day at home since February and I spent it traveling. There was even snow on the ground here to greet me. How nice! I’m in the great state of Illinois to do some acoustical testing for our insulation research project. The material is very good fire insulation but we need to know how it does with sound too. I’ve done a dozen fire tests now but this is my first acoustic test. I find it a comfortable area though since I’m familiar with decibels and frequency charts. Instead of speech recognition we test transmission, ie sound passing through it and absorption, ie how it stops sound bouncing around. I’m not sure what the sounds sound like yet. I’d guess some high tech noise of...
