Sometimes I forget that the things I post to the CI mailing lists I’m on might be good to put here too:
The transcript of this NPR show looks interesting. I haven’t gotten to listen to this yet (forgot to bring headphones to work, forgot to bring spare battery for CI #1 too! 3 weeks away sure [...]

Last night one of the local news weather people was asking on Twitter for favorite memories of 2009. I didn’t write in, but my favorite memory of 2009 was only a few hours old.
My new CI was activated yesterday afternoon and after going through and setting the comfortable volume level on 11 electrodes three or [...]

First things first. Music with my cochlear implant is way way beyond my expectations. But I had pretty low expectations.
Seriously, music sounds great now (5 months from activation). The CI adds a whole new layer of sounds that I couldn’t hear before. It helps bring out the lyrics. It adds the higher frequency percussion, cymbals, [...]

Sorry for the cut-n-paste job, but I’m traveling again for work this week without much time to write. I find this topic fascinating though. I’ve been wearing my hearing aid in the unimplemented ear (formerly my better ear) for almost 2 months now. For the next set of hearing tests I’ll ask to be tested [...]

I finally got around to taking some photos of my cochlear implant and accessories. It came with a lovely briefcase in the color I had chosen (reddish). The Opus2 consists of, from top to bottom, the ear hook, the processor which attaches to the wire going to the magnet coil head piece, and to the [...]

I was going to add this to the previous post but decided to start a new one here:
Hearing preservation was a goal of mine and my surgeon going into my CI surgery. We did implant the worse of my two ears, but I had a fairly significant amount of hearing in the lower frequencies. [...]

One week from now I’ll hopefully be done with surgery and on my way home if not already home. I won’t know what time to report on the 29th until the day before.
Working backwards from there…..
The night before surgery, Don and I will drive down to Chapel Hill and take up residence in the lovely Carolina Inn, [...]

Monday was my 2nd visit to UNC Chapel Hill. Everyone down there was highly anticipating that night’s Basketball game (not something I was following).
Sunday afternoon Don and I drove down and went to the house of my older cousin and his wife. My older cousins and I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to [...]

Today I came across http://hearingpreservation.com, a website for an annual conference on what it sounds like – hearing preservation. The abstracts from last year’s conference in Kansas City are online in a pdf file, and while most are only one page, and many go over my head by using technical terms for anontomy of the ear that [...]

Here is the audiogram from my CI evaluation at UNC on March 2nd.
It clearly shows my right ear (Os) versus my left ear (Xs). And shows that above 2000 Hz there was no response. That’s one change in the last 10 years – I used to have a response at 3000 Hz. (Edited to add: Maybe not, the [...]
