More deaf with CIs

One thing I’ve noticed since getting CIs is that I’ve never been as deaf in my life as when I don’t have them on. It isn’t so much the change in my hearing but more the fact that I was never without my hearing aids and never without spare batteries. I even slept with my [...]

A really useless transcription

Barely enough to get the gist of what he’s saying…. could have done better just focusing on trying to hear.
I prefer using text relay versus captel. The relay operator is a better advocate than I am for myself.
Outcome: no CI activation until the 4th even though I had an appt scheduled for tomorrow with the audiologists. [...]

Waiting and snow storms

Today is the day. I’m not first this time so have to wait more I think. Not terribly hungry due to stomach butterflies.
I had to reschedule/cancel my pre-op appointment that was supposed to be two days ago because Charlottesville got over two feet of snow. The snow stopped Saturday night but my street didn’t see [...]

Residual hearing post Medel CI

I just had my 6 month mapping and will post about that soon. In the mean-time for those who are curious, here is a comparison of my implanted ear’s audiograms before and after the CI (residual hearing). Hearing With the CI is 15-25 across the board, 250 to 6000 (they don’t test 125 [...]

Playing with Google Wave…

By now you’ve probably heard of Google Wave. It’s a new “collaboration tool” from Google designed to replace email some day… or something like that. Right now, to me, it just feels like a cross between threaded instant messaging, a multi-user forum, email, twitter, a chat room…
I’ve used instant messaging (IM) for [...]

More about work and motivation

Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation | Video on TED.com
I love the talks at TED.com.  Not only do they have subtitles in multiple languages on I think ALL videos, they are recorded in such a perfectly clear and high quality way that I can understand them without the subtitles.  Even on my tiny laptop [...]

The future culture of work

This is a very long presentation about work policies at Netflix but you can skim through it pretty fast.
I’d love it if I could get my company to adopt some of the freedoms seen here.  80% of my job is done on the computer (reports, CAD, reports, planning tests) and I can work on it anywhere.  [...]

Thoughts on improving education in the US

First note, this topic isn’t aimed at education of kids with a hearing loss, it’s just about education in the US in general.
Last week I saw someone post an article on Twitter about all the funding towards increasing technology for schools. Computers, networks, infrastructure, educational software programs, etc, etc. Billions of dollars each year. [...]

Tweets from Hi_Dan, A Twitter Troll

A month or so ago I was contacted randomly on Twitter by a guy named Dan Schwartz. We chatted a bit and it was a somewhat interesting conversation but the guy was obviously closed minded, ignorant and opinionated. When he called someone a cu*t I un-followed him. When he started going off on someone about [...]

Raining, sunshine and birds

We were covered in pollen which coated the new patio furniture no matter how often you brushed it off. When it started raining four days ago we were relieved. Everything was now so fresh, green, cleaned off. Today was the fifth morning to wake up to gray skies. It poured last night. A huge thunderstorm. [...]

Welcome

Photo of Sara Looking out a Window
I'm a 30 year old girl originally from upstate NY. I work full time as an engineer and try to pack as many hobbies into the other 14 hours of my day as I can. I lost my hearing at age 14 and have been using hearing aids since then. In April 2009 I received my first cochlear implant. That went really well so in December 2009 I got the second. The CIs are what prompted me to start writing publicly - but I try to cover other things as well.
