Had my second CI surgery today and am now bilateral. I missed my pre-op appointment due to being snowed in from the storm Friday and Saturday with no plows in sight on my street. I was pretty worried but when I called to tell them they said just come for surgery, they could do everything then [...]

Today is the day. I’m not first this time so have to wait more I think. Not terribly hungry due to stomach butterflies. I had to reschedule/cancel my pre-op appointment that was supposed to be two days ago because Charlottesville got over two feet of snow. The snow stopped Saturday night but my street didn’t see [...]

I can’t get myself to start typing this because I’m listening to music on my iPhone (built in iPod) and I’ve managed to load lyrics to almost all of my 1500 some songs. If I type then I can’t read along and the lyrics get lost. Music is sounding pretty good, even with just my CI. [...]

Having Monday off work threw my timing off on this post a bit. Or maybe just procrastination. First – I have a new audiogram and CUNY, HNT and CNC scores for my right (CI) ear, but I’ll put that in another post so it will be easy to find later. Big events of my third week with the CI: Saxophone [...]

Hi everyone, Today I have a request rather than an update. I was wondering if anyone would like to share their frustrations with their implants and how they overcame them (or not). For early frustrations, I’ve encountered several people now who, at initial turn on, couldn’t hear the tones, felt only vibration, couldn’t hear anything except static… [...]

I’m trying to make at least weekly updates here… Things I’m hearing that I’ve honestly never considered hearing before: The electronic door lock at work beeps when I open it with my ‘wand’ The keys I wear around my neck at work clink as I walk My boss swishes as he walks across the room towards me (nice to [...]

Today makes a week since my cochlear implant was activated. My friend asked me if I like it – of course my answer is “ask me in a few months”. The robot voices are much less beepy now and are more mumbley and underwater sounding. Still not intelligible without lipreading or a script. My own voice still bothers me [...]

This is one of my favorite videos about cochlear implants – especially the part about the damaged hairs and when a hearing aid won’t help… After the ‘how it works’ part there are three testimonials from people who chose the MED-EL brand. I’m sure every brand has people willing to go on camera and oooh and ahh [...]

We were covered in pollen which coated the new patio furniture no matter how often you brushed it off. When it started raining four days ago we were relieved. Everything was now so fresh, green, cleaned off. Today was the fifth morning to wake up to gray skies. It poured last night. A huge thunderstorm. [...]

I was going to add this to the previous post but decided to start a new one here: Hearing preservation was a goal of mine and my surgeon going into my CI surgery. We did implant the worse of my two ears, but I had a fairly significant amount of hearing in the lower frequencies. As [...]
